About Us
At the Digital Lab, we’re bridging healthcare and technology to improve lives and innovate care.
Technological advancement has influenced every aspect of our lives, including our health. Though our healthcare system has evolved over time, there remains a significant opportunity for impact at the intersection of science, art, and technology.
In 2016, we set out to seize this opportunity by assembling a unique interdisciplinary and digitally-oriented research and development unit at British Columbia Children’s Hospital, academically with the University of British Columbia.
Today, we’re known as the Digital Lab, a diverse team of specialists united by our passion for social impact and dedicated to improving the lives of children locally and around the world.
Our team combines expertise and experience from multiple disciplines including healthcare, engineering, design, computer science, psychology, and much more. We embrace the strength of diversity, both personally and professionally, and pride ourselves on a culture of curiosity, creativity, and courage to challenge the norm.

Team
Meet the people that make it happen, and their inner child that inspires possibility.
John founded the Digital Lab with a mission to improve healthcare through digital innovation. He has an interdisciplinary background in healthcare, science, technology, and research. He holds an academic appointment with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, and is also the Executive Director, Strategy & Operations, at BC Children’s and Women's Hospitals. Outside of work, you can usually spot him on his bike somewhere around the Vancouver seawall.
Sima has an extensive background in biomedical engineering, and a passion for impacting children's health on a global scale. Sima provides senior operational oversight for engineering and production operations, with intermittent breaks to find the perfect cappuccino (as a self-proclaimed coffee snob).
Suzy joined the Digital Lab in 2018, and provides oversight for the Media and Design functions, and leadership for the Digital Lab Studio. Her background includes illustration, animation, and film production in both Canada and Korea. In addition to her passion for digital media and technology, she's taken on an even more exciting role as a new mom.

Brian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his work with a background in kinesiology, psychology, and neuroscience. Brian's past work has included Studied the effect of high-intensity interval exercise on neuroplasticity and individual differences in response to non-invasive brain stimulation in healthy older adults and individuals who have had stroke.

Simon brings technical expertise from his Master of Data Science and studies in Nanotechnology Engineering. He works throughout the Digital Lab and enjoys diving in to new and unfamiliar topics!
Sarah is a multidisciplinary designer with a background in Asian Studies and Product Design. She prides herself on pixel perfection and clean but quirky animations. Her favourite things are black coffee and Siamese cats.
Sabina is a motion graphic designer, illustrator and food lover from Panama who loves bringing characters to life and use motion to create compelling stories. In her free time she likes to play videogames and watch cooking shows.
Gillian is a graduate from the Interactive Arts and Technology program at SFU with a focus in UX Design. She strives to create intuitive and accessible user experiences for people in healthcare.
Eunji completed her Masters of Fine Arts, Advertising Design, at Hongik University in Korea as well as a Diploma in Business from the University of Victoria. In addition to her formal training, she has worked as a web designer.
Joey completed his Master's degree in Architecture at the University of British Columbia and studied UX Design at Red Academy. In addition to UI / UX design, he also wears many other hats (literally and figuratively): visual storyteller, book cover compiler, greeting cards un-folder, and indie magazine collector.
